Are you ready to take your drawing and painting skills to the next level? Have you always wanted to draw and paint like the Old Masters but can't quit your teaching job to get full-time training? Apply for our month-long Summer Teacher Atelier today! (Application below.) We accept just 20 participants per session, into our atelier program to be held in Jersey City, NJ!
This is a professional development course for art educators who are seeking to improve their technical drawing and painting skills. The course is delivered throughout two, two week courses that together create a one-month-long studio intensive experience known as “atelier training.” The intention of this program is to provide quality atelier training for art teachers, and it is encouraged that participants attend multiple summers in order to master atelier skills. Participants are welcome to take just one, or both of these two week sessions. No previous realistic drawing or painting experience is necessary, and all potential participants wishing to increase their abilities in these areas are strongly encouraged to apply for the program. This program will be held every July so that participants can build on their skills each year. Priority acceptance is given to students who intend to complete both two week courses. CURRICULUM
July 8 - 19, 2019: Observational Drawing Skills
Taught by Mandy Theis (Hallenius)
This atelier intensive explores drawing and design principles. Participants will complete a series of increasingly more difficult projects as they learn and practice complex observational skills. Projects will include working from a 19th century drawing curriculum known as the Charles Bargue Drawing Course, still lifes, and cast drawing. By increasing visual literacy through this training, participants will be able to apply new drawing skills to future projects and greatly expand their content base for their classroom practices. Lesson plans will be provided as a resource for teachers to incorporate observational drawing skills into their curricula.
All supplies will be provided. There will also be a full day, class trip to major museums in the area with lunch and museum admission costs included as part of the curriculum.

This course will be taught by Mandy Theis (Hallenius), a classically trained artist who graduated from the Aristides Atelier in Seattle, WA. She has also studied with D. Jeffrey Mims, Kamille Corry, and Paul Ingbretson. Mandy is also the Co-President of the Washington Art Education Association and teaches workshops at state art conferences all over the country.

July 22 - August 2, 2019: Oil Painting
Taught by Mandy Theis (Hallenius) Explore the nuances of chroma, value, and hue through this two-week course that teaches participants how to use a full color palette to create realistic paintings. Participants will build their skills in painting through custom-tailored projects. Color matching, edge work, and creating effects with paint will be covered. All supplies will be provided. There will also be a full day, class trip to major museums in the area with lunch and museum admission costs included as part of the curriculum. Application is available at the bottom of this page. CLASS SCHEDULE
Classes will be held during the month of July each year. Class will always begin the first Monday after the July 4th holiday and continue through the last full week of July. Class days are Monday-Friday with field trips planned for the weekends. Morning studio is from 9:00am - 12:00pm and afternoon studio is from 1:00pm - 4:00pm. Field trips will be held the first Saturday of each session.
HOW TO APPLY:
The Teacher Atelier has limited space, and currently accepts only 20 students, per session, each year. Acceptance is competitive for this program, but it is not based on current level of skill in drawing and painting. Rather, this program is designed in part to encourage teachers who may not have a strong practice in drawing or painting to increase their skills and confidence for teaching these techniques in their home classrooms. Participants come from all over the country and internationally for this program.
The Earlybird application deadline is April 1, 2019, and applicants will be notified by May 1st whether or not they have been accepted. The final deadline for applicants is June 1st, 2019, and applicants will be notified shortly thereafter whether or not they have been accepted. A $500 non-refundable deposit is required by May 1st in order to reserve your space in the atelier. The remainder of tuition is due July 1st, 2019.

The Summer Teacher Atelier is located at 930 Newark Ave Unit T610, Jersey City, NJ in a historic industrial building. This building features stunning north facing light which is perfect for emerging oneself in the classical tradition.
Jersey City is 15 minutes outside of Manhattan via the Path train, which is walkable from the school. It is also near a number of phenomenal museums including the Met, The Frick Collection, and more!
