Workshop Choices:

Still Life Drawing for the Classroom

This workshop introduces a system for teaching skill-based still life drawing in K-12 classrooms. Participants will learn how to create collapsible still life boxes for classroom use, where every student can arrange their own objects and light source. Then, a variety of methods will be introduced for teaching drawing concepts to students. This workshop balances teaching new, skill-based drawing methods to participants while introducing lesson plan ideas for teaching drawing concepts to students. Participants will leave this workshop with a still life drawing of their own and the ability to teach still life concepts to all grade levels.

19th Century Drawing Course for the Contemporary Classroom

Participants will learn technical drawing skills by working from a 19th century French drawing course, considered by many historians to be one of the first drawing curricula ever circulated. This workshop will explore aspects of the 19th century method while teaching participants new techniques for accurately observing subjects, translating these observations into their own drawing and a contemporary drawing classroom. Lesson plans that feature technical drawing skills will accompany the instructor demonstrations and hands on portion of the class.

Making It Look Real   Ever have a student ask you what’s “wrong” with their drawing, and you didn’t quite know the answer? Take this workshop to discover how to control proportion, value, and perspective while learning how to identify and avoid common mistakes students make that destroy the perception of believable space.
