Bay Area Classical Artists Atelier in San Carlos, CA
with instructors Linda Dulaney and Mandy Hallenius

In this workshop, teachers will build on their own portrait drawing skills while simultaneously learning techniques for teaching portrait drawing to students.  Teachers will use traditional materials and methods to work from a live model in order to learn a variety of portrait drawing skills. Throughout the workshop, teachers will be introduced to lesson plans that connect portrait drawing concepts to their current classroom practice. This workshop is recommended for any art teachers who want to expand their skill sets, artists who are interested in teaching, and those who are interested in classical training.

Day 1: Teachers will work from a live portrait model to explore the underlying structure of the skull, learn methods for controlling proportion, and find the perspective of the head. Lesson plans will be introduced that integrate these skills into contemporary classroom curricula.

Day 2: Teachers will continue to work form a live portrait model and learn methods for dividing light and shadow, finding specificity in shadow shapes, and turning form. Methods for teaching portrait drawing skills
to students will be introduced throughout the day.
